Power, Original

20×20" (51×51 cm): Clara was about one and a half years old when we started to understand what she had. We were doing physiotherapy, talking to doctors, trying to figure out what the future looked like. In the middle of all of that, we made a decision. We put Clara in kindergarten, so she could be around other children, get stimulated, make friends... There was just one problem. Clara could not walk or crawl yet.

My dad found an old toy car in the trash. It was perfect. Now Clara had wheels, and wheels meant freedom.

First day of kindergarten, most kids were crying, clinging to their moms, making a scene. Clara looked at me, waved, and turned around. She was fine. More than fine. She was ready.

I have to say, I was a little bit sorry to be the only mom whose child did not even look back. But that image, Clara with her golden curly hair, in her little vintage car, waving me away, that is one I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Look at this painting. That deep, dark background, all that navy and black, that is everything that was uncertain, everything that was heavy and unknown. And that orange, bold and bright and covered in dots, sitting right in the middle of all that darkness without apology, that is Clara in her car.

Power is a reminder that no matter how dark things get around you, you have something inside you that does not surrender. You always have. Use it.

Once Upon is the collection where Clara went back to all of it. You will notice something different here. There is black in almost every piece, which is not something Clara usually does. That black is the hard parts, the struggles, the moments that were heavy. But the colors are so much bigger, so much louder, they take over everything. That is the whole point.

SPOTTED IN

Hi, I’m Clara.

Sometimes people tell me I shouldn’t dream so big. That because I can’t speak, read, or write, I should “stay quiet.” But I don’t want to stay quiet. I want to paint louder.

I had a stroke while I was still in my mom’s womb. The doctors told her my life would be a nightmare. But here I am — building my future.

Even though I can’t speak, read, or write, I understand three languages — English, Portuguese, and Italian. I guess my brain found its own way to communicate, just not the one doctors expected.

I’m writing this with the help of my mom (my business partner, my best friend, and my biggest cheerleader) and ChatGPT — and reading it with my text-to-speech app.

Painting became my language. It’s how I share everything I can’t say with words — my love, my anger, my hope, and my joy. Because even if my voice sounds different, I want you to hear me.
