When people ask Clara who she looks up to when she needs a little push to keep going, I always smile, because I already know the answer: Frida Kahlo.
Clara met Frida through a book I gave her when she was just 11 years old. Clara loved her. The story, the colors, the courage — everything about Frida spoke straight to her heart.
One night, while we were hanging out on the couch, Clara saw a photo of Frida’s art show in New York. She looked at me and said, “I want to do that.”
And without even thinking, I said, “Let’s do it.”
That was one of those little moments that changed everything — the spark that led to the dream, the art, the exhibitions, all of it. Clara started painting with bright, bold colors because that’s how she sees Frida: loud, strong, and full of life.
This artwork belongs to Clara’s series “Artists I Love,” where she paints artists who inspire her — Frida, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Vincent van Gogh. Each piece is like a thank-you note to the people who showed her what art is about.
When you hang Frida on your wall, it is a conversation between two artists who believe in never giving up.
For me, this piece carries a message for everyone who is learning every day to stand tall, overcome what life throws at us, and embrace the power of being ourselves.
