High School, Drawing (14x17")
This 17x14" (43x36 cm) marker-on-paper self-portrait is part of a profound series of three drawings that capture Clara Woods’ journey through middle school, high school, and her experiences with teachers. Each piece is a window into her unique story, filled with challenges, growth, and resilience.
High school marked a time of immense transformation for Clara. It was during these years that her family made the life-changing move from Italy to California. Amid the excitement of a new chapter, Clara also faced heartbreak, losing her beloved grandfather in a traumatic way. Enrolling in a school for people with disabilities brought both hope and frustration. While the school promised inclusion and interaction with the broader high school community, the reality didn’t match the expectations.
Clara found herself in a dual world—at home, her family encouraged her to dream big, change the world, and create a bright future. At school, the message was often to accept her limitations and focus on survival. It was a time of mixed emotions, where she cherished the love and care she received from peers and teachers but yearned for higher expectations and more meaningful opportunities.
This artwork is a story of resilience and the determination to rise above limitations. It serves as a reminder that growth often comes from the toughest challenges.
Investing in Clara’s art means more than starting or expanding your art collection. You’re supporting a small business, standing with the Inclusion Matters Movement, and owning a one-of-a-kind piece from an emergent artist who transforms her personal journey into powerful art.

I want everyone in the world to have one of my artworks because...
SPOTTED IN
Hi, I’m Clara.
Sometimes people tell me I shouldn’t dream so big. That because I can’t speak, read, or write, I should “stay quiet.” But I don’t want to stay quiet. I want to paint louder.
I had a stroke while I was still in my mom’s womb. The doctors told her my life would be a nightmare. But here I am — building my future.
Even though I can’t speak, read, or write, I understand three languages — English, Portuguese, and Italian. I guess my brain found its own way to communicate, just not the one doctors expected.
I’m writing this with the help of my mom (my business partner, my best friend, and my biggest cheerleader) and ChatGPT — and reading it with my text-to-speech app.
Painting became my language. It’s how I share everything I can’t say with words — my love, my anger, my hope, and my joy. Because even if my voice sounds different, I want you to hear me.
