My Brain 3, Original

48×36" (122×91 cm): Clara loves to paint her brain. This is the third time she has done it, and this one is special. This is little Clara's brain, the one she had as a small kid discovering the world.

Look at everything that is in there. Hearts and flowers, colors that have no business being that bold, shapes that do not follow any rules, a whole universe living inside one little head. This is what was going on inside Clara while everyone around her was trying to figure out what she could and could not do, while people were putting limits on her, drawing lines around what was possible.

Her brain had other plans.

Clara was always the happiest kid in the room. The one who, without speaking a single word, somehow said more than anyone else. The one who walked into a space and you could feel the joy, the love, the hope...

My Brain 3 is proof that where there is life, there is hope, and where there is hope, things grow. The iconic sun is in there, and the iconic hearts are in there!

This painting is a reminder that your brain is yours. Nobody gets to decide what it is capable of. Nobody gets to put a ceiling on it. You can use it to choose joy, to find the light, to grow something beautiful out of anything, even the hard stuff, especially the hard stuff.

Once Upon is the collection where Clara went back to all of it. You will notice something different here. There is black in almost every piece, which is not something Clara usually does. That black is the hard parts, the struggles, the moments that were heavy. But the colors are so much bigger, so much louder, they take over everything. That is the whole point.

SPOTTED IN

Hi, I’m Clara.

Sometimes people tell me I shouldn’t dream so big. That because I can’t speak, read, or write, I should “stay quiet.” But I don’t want to stay quiet. I want to paint louder.

I had a stroke while I was still in my mom’s womb. The doctors told her my life would be a nightmare. But here I am — building my future.

Even though I can’t speak, read, or write, I understand three languages — English, Portuguese, and Italian. I guess my brain found its own way to communicate, just not the one doctors expected.

I’m writing this with the help of my mom (my business partner, my best friend, and my biggest cheerleader) and ChatGPT — and reading it with my text-to-speech app.

Painting became my language. It’s how I share everything I can’t say with words — my love, my anger, my hope, and my joy. Because even if my voice sounds different, I want you to hear me.
